A wedding is, for most people, a once in a lifetime event that requires intricate and thorough planning. In the absence of clear-cut rules and procedures – which is for the better, considering everyone is different – many people easily get confused about how to manage the planning process and how much time to allocate it.
And to be fair, planning a typical wedding is not a walk in the park. There are venues to be arranged, outfits to be selected and bought, invitations to be sent, and evening celebrations
To help you along, we compiled two in-depth guides on wedding planning that cover all the major aspects of the process. To start off, we’ll look at the things required from a year or more before the wedding, up to six months to the day.
Time Before Wedding: A Year or More
Whether you are planning a massive celebration or a more intimate event, you need to start planning for it at least a year before the due date.
In particular, you need to decide what type of venue you want and make a preliminary booking on the same by the time the 12-month countdown begins. You also need to have a budget, or a rough estimate of it, ready at this stage.
When it comes to determining a venue, factors like who’s in your guest list, the preferred date and time of the wedding will also come into play, in addition to the budget. By getting these sorted earlier, you will be in a much better position to secure an ideal venue at a better rate. To that end, we suggest keeping an open mind and thinking outside the box. That essentially means being open to new and eccentric ideas, such as a boat cruise in NYC, as opposed to the bland traditional options
Other things to consider at this point would be the wedding theme and style and the wedding party. You may also want to select your wedding planner as well as the officiant earlier on to avoid last-minute disappointments.
Time Until Wedding: 8-10 Months
Some 8-10 months to the wedding, switch up the gear a little bit and start thinking about things like the gift registry, wedding insurance and the bride and groom’s outfits. You may also want to establish contact with various professionals such as DJs, caterers photographers/videographers and florists with a view of determining the final lineup. Depending on how busy your guests are, you can also send save-the-date cards to keep them on their toes.
Time Until Wedding: 6-8 Months
As the wedding day approaches, it’s time to make decisions on the wedding party’s outfits, menu, and the stationery and cake(s). You also need to get the transportation and rentals sorted out at this stage to give you peace of mind as the D-day approaches. Other non-ceremonial details, such as the engagement photoshoot, and honeymoon dates and venue should also be sorted out at this time. And as you do so, remember to allocate some buffer room and have ‘Plan Bs’ in case some things change.
